Family planning and reproductive health

Family planning and reproductive health is the treatment of and provision of health services for patients in relation to contraception, reproductive health and associated primary sexual health issues.

Vocational training in New Zealand

The vocational training requirement in family planning and reproductive health is the Diploma of Sexual and Reproductive Health. This is a clinical diploma awarded by the New Zealand Sexual and Reproductive Health Educational Charitable Trust. The Trust is made up of members from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Family Planning New Zealand and the New Zealand Sexual Health Society. Family Planning acts as the secretariat for the Trust.

Am I able to apply to work as a recognised specialist in New Zealand?

To apply for vocational registration in family planning and reproductive health, you need either:

  • the Diploma of Sexual and Reproductive Health qualification; or
  • an international postgraduate medical qualification in family planning and reproductive health, where your combination of qualifications, training and experience will then be assessed against the standard of the New Zealand Diploma of Sexual and Reproductive Health.

What standard will my training, qualifications and experience be compared against?
