Teleradiology
The special purpose teleradiology scope of practice enables doctors without the recognised New Zealand or Australasian qualification to provide teleradiology services for patients in New Zealand. This enables you to work temporarily (for up to 12 months maximum) as a diagnostic teleradiologist for a New Zealand-based healthcare provider.
Prerequisites
You can apply for this special purpose scope if you:
- hold an approved postgraduate qualification for special purpose teleradiology scope of practice
- are registered in a jurisdiction where you are able to obtain a postgraduate qualification approved by Council
- are providing radiology services under contract to a health provider located in New Zealand
- have been fully credentialed by that provider prior to applying for registration.
- work for an overseas facility that is accredited by an appropriate accreditation body
- have worked in radiology for 20 hours per week for at least 24 out of the last 36 months

Fellows of the College (FRANZCR)
if you hold the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR), we recommend you apply through the VOC2 Vocational (specialist) registration pathway instead. This pathway leads to permanent registration, and will be more straightforward for you and your employer.

If you want to work as a specialist in New Zealand, hold the approved New Zealand/Australasian postgraduate qualification, but do not already hold general registration, you can apply down the VOC2 pathway.

Doctors who hold overseas qualifications and who want to apply for registration in New Zealand must have key documents verified from their primary source.
Registration and supervision
We will consider your application once it is complete. If your application is successful, we will register you in a special purpose scope of teleradiology for 12 months.
Once registered you will need to work under supervision. Your supervision must be provided by the clinical director of your New Zealand health facility. Your supervisor will be responsible for:
- providing us details of the level of responsibility that will be delegated to you.
- providing you with an induction/orientation and a supervision plan that includes:
- details of how you will be supervised, how often you will meet with your supervisor and your supervisor’s availability by telephone and / or email
- details of how you will be audited – an audit must be carried out by your supervisor for 30 consecutive cases, to coincide with the first 3-monthly supervision report on you. Note: you or your supervisor should contact the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) to find out about their ongoing audit requirements
Supervision reports need to be provided to us every three months while you are working. These reports must include details of audits your supervisor has undertaken.
Reapplying for registration
You will need to renew your registration every 12 months. If you renew within two years of your practising certificate expiring, you will need to provide us:
- an updated job offer or evidence of continued employment for a further 12 month period (or less if applicable)
- an updated supervision plan
- a logbook – the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists will advise what they require
- any other audit requirements the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists require
- satisfactory quarterly supervision reports from the clinical director of your New Zealand health facility for the time you were previously registered with us.
If it has been two years or more since you were last registered in this scope, you will need to make a new application for registration.
